Traditional trenching digs an open trench along the whole line, lifts out the old pipe, and lays new pipe in its place. It works on any line, in any condition, including a pipe that has fully collapsed. It is the cheapest method per foot. The cost lands on the surface above, because the crew must tear up and rebuild whatever the trench crosses. It suits a shallow line under open lawn, or any line too far gone for a trenchless fix.

Pipe bursting is a trenchless replacement. The crew digs two small pits, then pulls a bursting head through the old pipe. The head shatters the old pipe outward and drags a new pipe in behind it. It replaces the pipe completely without an open trench, so it suits a line under a driveway, a patio, or mature landscaping that you want to keep. It needs enough working room at each pit and a pipe that is not badly collapsed.

Cured-in-place lining, or CIPP, does not replace the pipe at all. The crew inserts a resin-soaked sleeve into the existing pipe and cures it into a hard new pipe within the old one. It suits a pipe that is still structurally sound but cracked, corroded, or root-infiltrated. It is the least disruptive option. It cannot fix a pipe that has collapsed or lost its shape, because it needs a host pipe to line.

Repair, replace, or reline?

A spot repair fixes one bad section and leaves the rest alone. It is the right call when the camera shows a single crack, a broken joint, or one root intrusion in an otherwise healthy line.
