How a retaining wall build goes, step by step
A retaining wall build starts with excavation. The crew digs a level trench along the wall line and cuts back the slope to make room for the wall and its gravel backfill. On a steep or tall job, this earthwork is a real share of the labor. The deeper the cut, the more soil leaves the site.
Next comes the base and the wall itself. The crew lays a compacted gravel base, then builds up the wall course by course, or forms and pours it for concrete. Each block leans back slightly into the hill. That backward lean is called batter, and it helps the wall resist the soil behind it.
The last steps are drainage and the cap. As the wall rises, the crew backfills behind it with clean gravel and sets a perforated pipe to carry water away. A cap row or poured top finishes the wall. A short, simple wall can go up in a few days. A tall, engineered wall takes much longer.
What really moves your price
A retaining wall is priced by the square foot of wall face. Face area is the length times the height of the exposed wall. A longer or taller wall has more face, so it costs more. Material is the biggest single driver. Timber sits at the low end and natural stone at the high end, with concrete block and poured concrete in the middle. Height matters beyond raw area, too. A taller wall holds back far more soil, so it needs a stronger base, deeper footing, and often reinforcement.
Site conditions round out the price. A steep slope, poor soil, or tight access all raise labor. The hidden drainage system adds cost that you never see once the job is done. So does geogrid reinforcement buried in the hillside. A hard-to-reach backyard, where machines cannot fit, pushes the price up further.
Drainage, height limits, and permits
Drainage is the part of the wall you cannot see, and it decides whether the wall lasts. Water trapped behind a wall builds pressure against it. That pressure is what pushes walls over. A proper wall has clean gravel backfill and a perforated drain pipe that carries the water out to daylight.
Height changes the rules. Many areas require a permit once a wall passes a set height, often around four feet. Above that line, a licensed engineer usually must design the wall. The engineer sizes the base, the batter, and the reinforcement for the soil load. Skipping this step on a tall wall is a serious risk.
Tall walls also need reinforcement built into the slope. Geogrid is a strong mesh laid in layers behind the wall and anchored back into the hill. It ties the wall to the soil mass so the whole system moves as one. Tiebacks do a similar job. A short garden wall rarely needs any of this.
How to hire and vet the builder
Ask every bidder to spell out the drainage system in writing. A good bid names the gravel backfill, the perforated drain pipe, and where the water exits. If a bid skips drainage, that builder is cutting the one corner that matters most. Do not let a low number hide a missing drain.
Check the base spec too. The bid should state a compacted gravel base of a real depth, not just blocks set on dirt. For any tall wall, confirm that a licensed engineer will stamp the design and that a permit is included. A builder who waves off the engineer on a tall wall is a builder to drop.
Then vet the builder like any trade. Ask for photos of past walls and the addresses of jobs a few years old. A wall that still stands straight after several winters is the best reference there is. Confirm the builder is licensed and insured. Get every promise in the written bid, not in conversation.
Red flags and avoiding overpaying
The clearest red flag is a bid with no drainage system. Gravel backfill and a drain pipe are not extras. They are the wall. A builder who leaves them out will hand you a wall that leans or bulges within a few seasons. A slightly cheaper wall with no drainage is the most expensive wall you can buy.
Watch for a missing base and a missing batter. Blocks set straight up on bare soil, with no compacted gravel under them, will settle and tip. The wall should lean back into the hill, not stand dead vertical. Ask the builder to show you the batter and the base depth before work starts.
On a tall wall, treat any push to skip the engineer or the permit as a warning. That shortcut saves money now and risks a collapse later. Finally, avoid vague bids. A single lump sum with no breakdown hides what you are buying. A clear, itemized bid is easy to compare and hard to pad.
