Get an itemized bid, not a single lump number. The bid should list the unit, the labor, the venting, the expansion tank and pan, the permit, and haul-away of the old heater. Line items let you compare two quotes fairly and spot what one plumber left out.
Get at least two or three bids for anything beyond a plain swap. Ask each plumber to confirm the work meets current code and who handles the inspection. Confirm that removing and disposing of the old unit is included. A vague quote usually hides a cost that appears later.
Red flags and how to avoid overpaying
